From Coach Stanley:
Hello Select,
After careful consideration, thought and deliberation with the coaches and after watching and re-watching the game videos from the EYBL tourney, we are releasing our EYBL Select all-tourney teams. So many players played their absolute best that we decided to choose 3 teams plus some defensive standouts. Following is our all-tourney 1st team. Players who didn’t play in the tourney because of various reasons could not be included. The following Players played with the ethos of Select and produced the most consistently dominating results during the Tourney.
All tourney 1st Team
Jonathan Xue (U14A & B) – his understanding, skill and knowledge how to use his great athleticism increases every practice. Had a dominant tournament defending the other team’s top player and was equally good defending on the perimeter and inside. On the boards, he is an animal. Great job facilitating, cutting and screening. Extremely unselfish, completely team oriented and a good leader and Select’s most consistent defensive communicator. 14B’s leading scorer who finishes at the hoop in the half court and transition, posts up and is developing a consistent mid-range shot and the ability to put the ball on the floor.
Jeff Wu (U12A) – player efficiency rating of 51. Highest in Select. MVP level is over 30. Defends every position from guards to centers. Strong off the ball team defender. Over 50 rebounds in the tourney. Strong finisher inside and in transition. Good outside shot. Can put the ball on the floor and pass or finish at the hoop. Very good judgement and decision making. A complete player. No real weaknesses to his game. Never tires, competes continuously and is always working to defend the ball or get himself or a teammate open. Beats the opponent down the floor on offense and always gets back to stop the ball in transition. Probably the Club’s best overall defensive player regarding on-ball, off ball, close outs, awareness and technique.
Devan Chung (U12A) – only 1 turnover in four games. PER of 35. Gave u12a a huge competitive advantage in that we could pressure the ball against our opponents but they couldn’t pressure us. Coasted a bit in the first 3 games. Against Spurs for the championship, finally got mad and showed what he can do and should do every game. Controlled the offense with a command performance and would not let the team settle for mediocre shots. From the beginning of the 1st quarter to towards the end of the 3rd quarter he attacked the basket ferociously and relentlessly in transition or half court on every possession for 3 quarters. On defense, he and the other Select guards and wings just would not allow the Spurs any space or angle to enter the ball to their bigger players. As a result U12A built a 34-0 lead until finally conceding a score towards the end of the 3rd.
Ben Zhang (U12B) – Ben was by far the best offensive player for U12B and was as aggressive as we’ve ever seen him. There was not a single player all day that could match up with him one on one. He was a wrecking ball of butcher knives. He hit jump shots consistently as well as attacking the basket. He also played tough on ball defense. U12b was consistently outmatched by size but Benny was beasting boards away and thundering the ball up the open court where he often found open teammates in transition.
Reagan Cornish (U10A) – Made a ton of big shots in both games. Is a threat to score from anywhere on the offensive half of the court. Did a better job of handling the ball, distributing and playing on and off defense than we’ve ever seen him. He was a leader on the court. He had the move of the tournament. He was getting pressured up the left sideline, he goes in and out dribble and crosses over to his left and then crosses over behind his back to his right leaving his man a pretzel on the floor. He pulls up at the 3 point line and drills it. Running back down the floor he holsters his right arm. It gets buckets.
All tourney 2nd team will be released tomorrow.
